Case Study: Starbucks Logo
Small tweaks to brands can have a big impact. Take a company like Starbucks, now in 55 countries around the world and ranked the 52nd most powerful brand in the world by Forbes.
When their 40th anniversary was approaching they decided to refresh their brand identity. Working with international brand design agency Lipponcott, they launched a new 'wordless' logo in 2011.
Many were surprised the company dropped "Startbucks Coffee" from the logo and relaunched with a tweaked version of the famous green siren. For Starbucks, the current logo points to a future beyond coffee.

What can we learn from the Starbucks rebrand?
Less is more. Don't confuse customers with a complex logo design that sends different messages. Creating a 'sticky' logo requires a focus on simplicity.
Nike and McDonald's logos are examples where reducing the number of unnessary elements to the core means the iconic brands are still unmistakeable. Lesson? Retain core elements and drop the superfulous elements. The Gap logo disaster took this minimising approach too far. For aspiring entrepreneurs, your logo should communicate what makes your new cafe or restaurant unique.
Remember to specify which mediums your logo will appear on (signage, menus, business cards, website). Read ten steps to the perfect design brief before you launch your project.
Test your logo. When you crowdsource a logo, you receive loads of designs, which is awesome because you can test the designs out on your customers. Try and balance feedback from friends and family, with feedback from your customers/potential customers.
Use DesignCrowd's polling tools to get feedback from your customers on your logo shortlist. It's super-easy, fast and fun! You might discover your favorite logo is not the one your potential customers picked.
